NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced plans to hold Upgrade 2023, the NTT Research Summit, as an in-person event on March 15-16, 2023. This year’s summit, organized under the theme.

NTT Research, Inc., a division of NTT (TYO:9432), today announced plans to hold Upgrade 2023, the NTT Research Summit, as an in-person event on March 15-16, 2023. This year’s summit, organized under the theme “Scaling the Future,” opens on March 15 at 9:00 a.m. (PST). The free, two-day event will focus on scaling ideas to innovations that can impact the world. Day 1 will focus on the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative and will include an Innovation Expo. Day 2 will feature sessions on breakthroughs in data privacy, precision cardiology, nonlinear optics, advanced encryption technologies, the digital workplace, and the network edge. Speakers include executives and scientists from NTT Group companies. The in-person event will take place at the NTT Experience Center (XC) and the Metreon, both in San Francisco.

The topic for Day 1 (March 15) of Upgrade 2023 is IOWN, the innovative vision proposed by NTT in 2019 to enable high-speed, large-capacity communication and information processing infrastructure that transcends current limitations while addressing the growing concerns on energy consumption of IT. The exhibition showcases the most up-to-date innovations occurring at NTT Research in the U.S. and NTT R&D in Japan, and it will take place at the NTT XC, 690 Folsom St., San Francisco. Day 1 events extend from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Day 2 (March 16) of Upgrade 2023 will include keynote presentations by Kazuhiro Gomi, President & CEO of NTT Research, and Atsuko Oka, EVP, and Head of NTT Research and Development (R&D) Planning and member of the NTT Research Board of Directors. The keynotes will cover breakthroughs in basic research as well as a vision for future innovations coming from NTT. Oka will present the short and long-term ambitions for IOWN, an initiative born out of the basic research labs of NTT R&D. Day 2 also includes panel discussions focusing on the relationship between culture, fundamental research, and innovation. Moderator Paul Rand, host of the University of Chicago’s Big Brains podcast, will guide the panel through a discussion of how to serve society through the pursuit of ideas with possible applications in business. It will also explore the journey of ideas from basic research to proof-of-concept and prototyping to expanding and potentially world-changing reach.

Other sessions on Day 2 will feature the following topics and speakers:

  • Privacy-Preserving Aggregate Statistics; Elette Boyle, Senior Scientist, Cryptography and Information Security (CIS) Lab, NTT Research. How can a modern business meet the challenge of gathering necessary aggregate user statistics without being exposed to the personal data of individuals? This talk will present new cryptographic solutions for safely performing this collection while simultaneously protecting against possible malicious users. Underlying these potential applications is a technology of “zero knowledge of distributed data.”
  • Probabilistic Estimation of Cardiovascular Bio Digital Twin Parameters; Iris Shelly, Research Scientist, Medical and Health Informatics (MEI) Lab, NTT Research. The MEI Lab aims to realize precision cardiology through the development of patient-specific digital twins. While the fundamental framework is a mechanistic model of cardiovascular physiology, an individual patient’s cardiovascular system is a unique and complex interaction of many variables. This talk will present a method of parameter estimation used to personalize the model.
  • Integrated Nonlinear Optics for Coherent Information Processing; Tim McKenna, Principal Scientist, Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab, NTT Research. Efficient solutions to combinatorial optimization problems could deliver tremendous benefits, but the required computing resources are lacking. NTT Research is developing alternative computing schemes based on coherent networks and integrated photonics technologies. This talk will share recent progress with lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits and show how recent breakthroughs can change the game for information processing.
  • Using Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) to Protect Privacy in Surveillance Camera Images; Pascal Mathis, Senior Software Engineer, and Jean-Philippe Cabay, Data Scientist, NTT Belgium. This talk will discuss how ABE can achieve proper access control of sensitive information in surveillance images. It will also explore other potential uses of ABE involving medical images, regulation, and scanned documents.
  • Digital Workplace – Future Solutions, Experienced Today; Mary Leos, Digital Innovation and GTM, and Vishal Brown, Digital Workplace Services, NTT DATA. Technology has empowered people to be more informed, mobile, collaborative, and generally more productive while expecting their experience with technology and services to be compelling and rewarding. This session will discuss how NTT DATA is creating digital workspaces that are frictionless, proactive, and relevant.
  • Innovation at the Edge – Delivering Real Business Outcomes; Parm Sandhu, VP, Enterprise 5G Products and Services, NTT Limited, and Cédric Jarkovsky, Head of Product Development and IoT Marketing, NTT-Transatel. This session will uncover infrastructure and operations opportunities and provide practical use cases that leverage emerging edge technologies (e.g., edge computing, IoT, P5G, computer vision and location tracking) that support critical productivity, efficiency, and performance needs.
